Health Insurance FAQs: Coverage, Costs, Eligibility, and Enrollment
Get answers to common questions about Obamacare, Medicaid, and Special Enrollment. Hablamos Español.
Obamacare / Marketplace Plans
Obamacare is the nickname for the Affordable Care Act (ACA). It lets individuals and families shop for health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace, often with income-based discounts that lower monthly costs. You choose a plan, enroll, and your coverage starts as long as you qualify and apply on time.
You usually qualify if you live in Florida, are a U.S. citizen or legal resident, and don’t have affordable coverage through a job. Your income and household size determine what plans and savings you’re eligible for.
Yes. Many people qualify for $0 or very low monthly premium plans because of government subsidies. The exact amount depends on your income, age, and location, but $0 plans are common for eligible households.
Yes. Marketplace plans must be reviewed and renewed every year because prices, benefits, and subsidies can change. Reapplying helps make sure you’re still getting the best coverage at the lowest cost.
Medicaid Transition Help
You typically have 60 days after your Medicaid ends to apply for a Marketplace plan. Missing this window could mean waiting months for coverage, so timing matters.
If you lost Medicaid, you’re not out of options. Losing Medicaid usually qualifies you for a Special Enrollment Period, which allows you to enroll in a Marketplace health plan right away.
Possibly, but many people are surprised how affordable Marketplace plans can be, especially with subsidies. Some plans cost very little per month and still offer strong coverage.
Most people need proof of income, loss of Medicaid coverage, and basic household information. An advisor can help you figure out exactly what’s needed so nothing slows you down.
Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
You can apply online, but many people choose to speak with a licensed advisor to avoid mistakes, find better savings, and make sure their plan actually fits their needs.
A Special Enrollment Period is a limited-time window that lets you enroll in health insurance outside the regular open enrollment period when you experience a major life change.
Common SEP triggers include losing Medicaid, losing job-based coverage, moving, getting married, having a baby, or other qualifying life events.
Most SEPs last 60 days from the date of the qualifying event. Once it ends, you usually must wait until the next Open Enrollment period to apply.
